At 3486 feet in elevation, Mt. Umunhum is the second highest peak in the Santa Cruz Mountain range, which separates Monterey Bay and Santa Cruz from Silicon Valley (Only Loma Prieta, five miles to the south-east, is higher at 4085 feet). Mt. Umunhum (Indian for ``hummingbird'') was the location of the Almaden Air Force Station from 1956 to 1980. The remnants of a massive five story building that supported a 124 ft wide 85 ton rotating radar antenna can still be seen from the neighboring valley floors.
Excellent visibility of the entire Santa Clara Valley and the Monterey Bay area make Mt. Umunhum a prime commercial and government radio site.
About one half mile along the ridge to the south-east, the National Weather Service has located its NEXRAD weather radar, which is recognizable from much of the northern Monterey Bay.
